This chapter begins by distinguishing between acute care hospitals, long-term care facilities, rehabilitation centers, behavioral health institutions, and ambulatory care centers. It explains how hospitals may function as community, teaching, or specialty institutions and categorizes them as governmental, nonprofit, or for-profit entities. Each type plays a distinct role in delivering patient care, depending on the needs of the population it serves.

There are four levels of healthcare: primary, secondary, tertiary, and quaternary care. It explains how patients progress through these levels, starting with health promotion and disease prevention at the primary level, followed by more complex diagnostics and treatments in higher levels of care. The classification provides a framework to understand how care is organized and delivered, emphasizing the importance of proper referral systems and integrated care pathways for ensuring efficient, high-quality healthcare delivery.
